World Cup 2026 Groups & Format
The 2026 World Cup is the first with 48 teams. Here is exactly how the 12 groups work, who advances, and what the new format means for your bets.
The 12 Groups
48 teams are drawn into 12 groups of four, labelled A through L. Each team plays three group matches; live group fixtures and odds are on the fixtures and odds pages.
Who Advances: The Round of 32
This is the biggest change in 2026. The knockout phase now starts with a Round of 32, and qualification works like this:
- 12 group winners advance automatically.
- 12 runners-up advance automatically.
- The 8 best third-placed teams across all 12 groups also advance, ranked by points, goal difference and goals scored.
In other words, 32 of 48 teams survive the group stage. Finishing third is often enough, which keeps more teams alive into the final round of group matches than in any previous World Cup.
Group Tiebreakers
Teams level on points within a group are separated by goal difference, then goals scored, then the head-to-head result between the tied teams, followed by fair-play points and, as a last resort, a drawing of lots.
What the Format Means for Betting
- Fewer dead rubbers, but more rotation. With third place often enough to advance, big teams that have already qualified are more likely to rest starters in the final group match. Check line-ups before betting.
- Third-place permutations create odd incentives. A team needing only to avoid a heavy defeat may play for a narrow loss margin, which matters for handicap and goals markets.
- Group winner markets run deeper. With 12 groups instead of 8, there are more outright group-winner bets, and the less glamorous groups are usually priced less sharply.
- The Round of 32 adds a full extra knockout round, 16 more knockout matches than the old format, including potential mismatches between group winners and third-placed sides.
